I am so embarrassed....

[From the Washington Post: Bush comments on Intelligent Design]

You know - I have met people from other countries who actually do not believe there is a signifcant portion of the population in the US that does not believe in evolution. They give thoughts such as that the same credence most people give Weekly World News stories. I mean sure - they have heard the stories about the religious Right in the US, about the Scopes Monkey trial (which was so long ago), about the Harry Potter book burnings. But evolution? Come on. They may be dumb...but they are not that dumb, are they? They have nuclear weapons. The best universities in the world. Brilliant Nobel Prize winning scientists doing all kinds of research.

Well our Prez sure laid all those doubts to rest.
I am embarrassed to be an American....
I am humiliated to know I have relatives that actually voted for this idiot (though thankfully none in my immediate family)
I feel terrible for all of those hard-working hs science teachers out there who will probably have to spend a significant amount of time explaining to their classes exactly why what Bush said is such a complete fucking joke. "Well you see class, Bush was giving a great big sloppy blow job to his base - errrr...the Christian Right, and telling them that their wacko ideas were now the mainstream and have the Presidential Seal of Approval. Some of your parents might even actually agree with him. Actually - I know a majority of the school board does. And while I may lose my job over this, hell is going to freeze over before you catch me teaching that Intelligent design bullshit (which is just a dressed up version of Creationism) to any class of mine."

[Anyway...click here for some bitter laughs. It made me feel slightly better]
