Down with Dr. Phil!!!!!

It reminds me of an article in this underground newspaper I helped start in hs, though. One of our writers met my friend Tamim on a BBS board where they pirated software and anime - and he wrote this article titled 'Stone The One-Eyed Mind-Controlling Cyclops!" which was all about the evils of television and how it rots your brain and gets you to conform to the will of an evil corporate controlled society and turns you into a mindless consumer zombie. So his solution was to throw a rock through your television set and read more.

I look at the success of someone like Dr. Phil - and the idea grows more and more appealing the older I get =)

I have to agree with your friend about the television. Not only does it parade rampant consumerism in front of our eyes all the time, but the Mass Media puts so much spin on everything that I need Dramamine to watch the news.

So I got rid of my cable and only have network television now, and I took the TV out of my bedroom. If I want to watch something, I'll pop in a DVD. Otherwise, I get my news and whatnot from other sources...like the internet.

And I agree with you on Dr. Phil -- can't stand him!

Yes...I can't stand the media. I go to the Guardian or the BBC to find international news or even find out what's happening domestically. It's pathetic. There are hardly any shows on that I'm addicted to - and those which I can't live without I can get using bittorrent.

Dr. Phil is a condescending jerk. I think there are a lot of people who were missing a strong parental figure in their childhoods - so he fills a surrogate role which is why he gets the attention he does. Or used to. He's been media whoring like crazy - and I think his show is going to get it's ticket punched soon. Anyway...I can hope! =)

I haven't checked out the Guardian, but I agree with you about the BBC. In addition to the internet version, I'm lucky that public television and public radio in my area both carry BBC news broadcasts.

I'm very glad that public TV and radio are still around...
