In South Dakota now, catching up on all the Daily Shows I have missed. Stewart doing this bit on the British elections, and juxtaposing news clips of the kind of typical questions Blair has to deal with vs. what our Honorable Shrub has to deal with. Absolutely no comparison.

Typical Blair scene: Blair in the middle of a crowd of incredibly pissed off college students fielding unscripted questions and comments. This one girl (my jaw fucking dropped) stands up and tells Blair:

"You lied to this country, you lied to the world, and you disgraced your office. You should resign now!"

Loud thunderous applause. Blair smiles, calmly responds to her contention that he lied, and moves on to the next inquisitor (who has more of the same). Over here, the Secret Service would not have let her within 10 miles of our Beloved POTUS.

Oh - and when he entered - no one stood up and there were loud boos and catcalls.

Typical Bush scene: Standing before a crowd of jubilant hand-picked supporters all on their feet shouting their brains out. Some fat woman up front jumps up to proclaim: "I just want to say, you're the coolest President ever." Bush gives awwww shucks grin. More jubilant applause.

I've been reading a lot of bitching on-line from residents of the UK about how screwed up their election process is. It's a choice between Michael Howard with the Tories, or Blair, or some Liberal Democrat (which I gather is sort of like our Green party over here only they actually have representation in the government).

Although I don't like Blair, and hate the position he took on Iraq, I still find him to be 10x the leader our Bush is. If Bush had to answer hard questions I've seen Blair take in press conferences and in the House of Commons, he would be curled up in the fetal position.

Also, if young college students can get close to their elected leader and denounce him without fear and without having government agents sequestering them out of sight in "Protest Zones", and Blair can still respond respectfully to their denunciations and their exercise of free speech, then dammit something is working with British democracy that we don't have here at the present moment. I think the Brits have a lot to be proud of.

Yep...

I totally agree, it's sad we're supposed to be the country with the most freedom, and yet we would never be allowed to pose the questions that actually need answering to "President" Bush...

Yep... Totally. And that would be so AWESOME to see...

I don't know why we're so messed up here right now. I wish it was different. I think things would be a lot healthier if our press showed a little less deference and respect to the President.

Of course then they wouldn't get the access. But just repeating what his advisers spoon feed him isn't giving them access anyway. They're just a megaphone to spread lies.

I totally agree with you.
But it won't happen...
Unfortunately, I don't think anything will be changing any time soon.
