So I thought my flist might like this essay by Teresa Nielsen Hayden: “Fanfic”: force of nature
Essay is pretty short - but the comments are engaging and intelligent for the most part. Can we just get rid of copyright laws altogether? They just seem like these horrible shackles placed upon human creativity, and hardly ever seem to benefit the artist. Oh - and this essay from another Tor employee Anna Louis is an awesome and in-depth look at the economics of publishing softcover novels. It really is not pretty. Terrifying read for any potential future writers out there.
