Spokane it depends. A lot of the smaller shops will say "no, I'm sorry, I can't accept that" when you try to hand them a Canadian coin. Employees of WalMarts and whatnot are usually too apathetic to care.
And, um, I can't speak for all of Canada, but yeah, last time I was there (up near Edmundton), the machines I encountered took both US and Canadian coinage. And didn't give a fair exchange rate either. You're right. They're sneaky bastards.
