Okay, so I know no one in my flist probably cares, but Ellsworth is getting axed so it's huge news for South Dakota. The really funny part for me is that SD voters just booted Tom Daschle (Senate Minority Leader) and elected some new Senator John Thune who just went around repeating Republican talking points which anyone can download off the Internet. But his ONE BIG CAMPAIGN PROMISE was that because he was a Republican, he could talk to Bush and keep Ellsworth open.
Of course - being a young Senator he doesn't have a tenth of the juice Daschle had as Senate Minority Leader and holding key positions on important committees. It doesn't matter if he's a Republican and Daschle was a Democrat. During the last round of base closings, Daschle spoke with Bush and had Ellsworth removed from the closure list.
Which anyone with an ounce of political intelligence would have known. But not in this state, apparently. I knew as soon as Thune won that they had lost Ellsworth.
Anyway....I think the gov is going to be flying back to Washington to go bitch about it (as well as all the Congress critters - and there aren't many).
That is all that is on the news now. And I am bored as hell, and so have been listening to it all day. The other big news story was this old woman in Sioux Falls who self-published her own cook book and was selling them out of her garage. Not on-line - just out of the garage. If you want a copy - the newscaster gave her home phone number over the air. I couldn't believe it. They would never have done that in California.
THERE IS NOTHING TO DO AROUND HERE!!!!!!!!!!! And the nearest town is Rapid City is 25 miles away (so it's actually 50 miles round trip). And I don't think there is a Starbucks where I could get a latte within a day's drive of where I am right now.
I need to do some serious reading.
Thank god the community center has a huge swimming pool. I'm going to be using that a lot I think.
